Don't worry Lyra, it did kinda make sense. But, it's more like stoves. Tyria and Cantha can be taken for American/European power distribution systems. Character slots are abstracted as how many pizzas my oven can cook.
For example:

I buy a stove. It will only run on American outlets, and it can cook four pizzas at once.

I decide to take a trip to Europe. I'll obviously need to cook pizzas while I'm there. My old stove cooks them really well (I love my existing characters), but it won't do anything if I bring it as is. So...

I buy a second stove. It only complies to European outlets. It can also cook four pizzas simultaneously. Now I can cook pizzas anywhere. The new oven can cook pizzas pretty well too. Technically, I can also cook eight pizzas simultaneously, too, but I'd have to fly back and forth a lot and the pizzas would burn while I was doing that...

But what if I go for the other option, and upgrade my first stove? Now it can cook pizzas anywhere, anytime. It cooks pizzas really, really well. I can now have four delicious pizzas anywhere I want. But wait! Those crafty engineers have somehow managed to give me more room in my oven. I can make six pizzas now! Huzzah!

Now, obviously analogy has its own problems. But I think I did a good job.

I think I'd like to keep all my fingers! hahahahahaha

I personally have no problem with the 6 slots I'm going to have when I merge the 2 keys. I just want to keep my Ranger, Monk, and Warrior from Prophecies. I will continue the Necromancer I created for the FPE (which was deleted from Prophecies - 1 mission away from Ascension and almost level 20 ) My extra 2 slots will be for a PvP character (never had one yet) and maybe an Assassin.

Ok all, I think it's time to stop correcting all the idiots who, after all this time, still have outragious misconceptions about how Factions is going to work, because frankly, I don't want to have to play with them in the game. Understanding why a merged account only gets 6 slots instead of the full 8 from an unmerged account doesn't take much thought. Understanding that committing to only one of the two factions doesn't mean you're only getting half of a game doesn't take much thought. Understanding why giving ppl the ability to change their primary attribute as well as their secondary is a terrible idea doesn't take much thought. If I could change my character completely I might as well just have one character I play the whole time and just have the rest of my slots as mules that carry around all the armor/equiptment. What? No. Please don't by Factions. I'd rather not have to heal your sorry A/Mo asses when I'm doing missions.

Random firing of neurons...

Changing primary... record level reached at each primary. If you're level 20 monk, change to ... ranger, for example... you're a level 1 ranger starting in Ascalon. Your armor doesn't work anymore... you're nekked. Weapons won't work. No skills either (unless they were unlocked already via secondary). Time to go shopping. You have no secondary and can't leave Ascalon until a new NPC gives you one.

All items from your former primary are in your personal storage... you can't change primary without enough room.

This could work. You could conceivably be a Monk/20 Ranger/1 for example. You could be a level one with elites if they were a secondary unlock. You could switch back to a Monk and be level 20 again and ascended (if you were). You would not be recognized as ascended in a new primary.

Of course, I think the whole changing primary is a bad idea and there is no problem with the number of character slots we have/ will be having. Trying to add something constructive. However, six slots (merged accounts) will be plenty.

1. i link the accounts. i have these 8 slots that can access everything PLUS the 2 extra slots????
OR
2. as posted a couple posts above...do i only have 6 slots that can access everything?
is it possible that i lose 2 slots for the access to both chapters?
OR
3. just the 8 slots that access both chapters?

i keep reading about 6 slots, nobody is mentioning the 8 they purchased and if you do get 4 each, only the 2 bonus slots can access both chapters?
You have a Prophecies account with 4 slots. Period. When you buy Factions you have no extra slots.

You install Factions and have two choices.
1. Merge with Prophecies. You now have six slots with full access. -OR-
2. Install separate. You have the base four Factions slots for your Factions account in addition to the base four slots for Prophecies.

Either way, you have more slots than you started with and have lost nothing. You can't lose what you never had.

Why didnt you people just send yourself an invite instead of deleting a character?

To the OP: you shouldn't hold much hope for Anet to change the game to make 4 character slots more tolerable. The game is designed to give you not quite enough because they're in the business of selling licenses.

Not that I'm hating. They have to pay the bills somehow.

Exactly.

Some more solutions I've read on other threads:

Since characters are relatively easy to level up, items become more of a concern than skills or levels. Now, I don't think their should be an "uncustomize" feature, but at the very least, their should be a way to get back Sup Runes of Vigor and Absorption without any chance of losing them.

Elites already unlocked on an account should be available for purchase, but at a high cost (3,000+)?

I think the slot issue is perhaps overstated. I mean, besides FoW armor, 1 million+ uber rare items, and the aforementioned Runes, what really hold people to their characters? If part of the fun is unlocking new skills and finding new weapons, then wouldn't deleting characters and "starting over" just be more fun?

Just saying...

Woah buddy 20-30 k armor including runes? Get off the citadel and grotto enjoy forge. Didn't bother to read whole thing, simply skim, can't stomach a thread of rants.

7,500 for a armor or less, Runes are super cheap unless going for monk and thats about it.

The whole 4+4=6 argument fails to hold any water however. It's invalid. It's either:

1. 4 slots Factions, 4 slots Prophecies -OR-
2. 6 slots merged Factions and Prophecies.

You have the choice between 1 or 2.

You currently have 4 slots Prophecies. Either way you gain significantly and lose nothing.
